The best way to set up your email accounts and forwarding depends on several factors. This document will give you some guidelines for making the best choices for your email account.
You have two overall choices.
- From a support standpoint, it is simplest for you and for us if we are taking care of your domain and your email accounts.
- We can generally handle unique email configurations that other isps don't want to be involved with.
- If there is an email problem, we can generally solve it quickly if we are hosting the email.
- A few providers (including AOL) make it impossible to set up your email account so you can send out mail that appears to be coming from your domain. Switching to our email account will resolve this issue
2. We can forward mail that is directed to your website to other accounts that you might already have set up with another isp.
Advantages:
- You might be comfortable your current email provider (like gmail or yahoo) and don't want to give it up.
- Some providers offer massive amounts of disk space for email that go beyond what we can provide.
- Some email providers might have specific features associated with their email programs that you are reliant on.
- If you are getting email from other addresses not associated with your website, you might prefer to manage them in one place.
So what is the best choice?
If you are unsure what to do about your email, it probably makes the most sense for us to set up an account for you. You can always go back to your other email program if you prefer it.
If you use a webmail program like Hotmail, Yahoo, or Gmail, and you really love the features and disk space that you get with that program, you can stick with that program. We don't recommend AOL for anyone, but if you feel you can't live without it, we can forward your mail to your AOL account.
Getting your email configuration set up
1. Give us a list of email address you would like to have set up with your website for people needed specific accounts.
Examples:
franks@diveindesigns.com
bsmith@diveindesigns.com
2. Give us a password for each account.
Examples:
frankg Bat4MAN2
lisar Sup3rW0man
3. Give us any customer service type email accounts you might need. Let us know if you need to give them their own user and password or simply deliver them to someone's address we set up.
For example, you might want saleshelp@diveindesigns.com to go to franks@diveindesign.com
Note: We recommend avoiding generic addresses like info@, sales@. Those addresses will just attract large volumes of spam.
Please let us know if you would like to discuss your email configuration in more detail.
